Puerto Rico Treasury employee pleads guilty to bribery conspiracy linked to $6.77 million tax-revenue loss

The U.S. Department of Justice said Alexander Ortiz-Robles, a Puerto Rico Department of Treasury employee, was charged by information and pleaded guilty to a bribery conspiracy under 18 U.S.C. § 371. According to the plea agreement, he accepted payments and other benefits in exchange for submitting false information to eliminate or evade taxes, causing an approximate $6.77 million loss. He is awaiting sentencing.

The DOJ said the payments were made through third parties that charged customers to illegally reduce their tax liabilities. The announcement also referenced separate related cases involving other Treasury employees, individuals and businesses; those defendants’ outcomes varied, including guilty pleas pending sentencing, and should not be treated as findings against uncharged parties.
