A US federal jury convicted former New Orleans Police Department officer Christian Conrad Claus of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, wire fraud, bribery-related conspiracy and use, and making a false statement to a federal agent. The jury did not reach a verdict on one mail fraud count; sentencing is scheduled for 22 September 2026.
According to the indictment, Claus conspired with a homeowner and an art appraiser to submit an insurance claim for paintings allegedly reported as stolen and valuable, and allegedly used his police position in return for a share of proceeds and employment assistance. The homeowner, Fouad K. Zeton, and appraiser Michael Jon Schofield previously pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.
