The former COO of Jackson Health Foundation, Charmaine Gatlin, pleaded guilty on 11 September to embezzling at least $4.3 million through false invoices and kickbacks, according to the US Department of Justice. The DOJ said she directed funds to herself, relatives or unrelated entities, including through audiovisual and merchandise vendors, and accepted luxury goods and a golf cart. Vendor Yergan Jones also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
The DOJ said Gatlin admitted approving about $2 million in invoices for services not provided, with $1 million in kickbacks paid to her. Sentencing is scheduled for 25 November; she faces a maximum 20-year prison term. These are guilty pleas and admissions, not a sentencing judgment.
