The DOJ said Evelyn Herrera pleaded guilty to an information charging her with participating in a conspiracy to pay health care kickbacks. According to court documents, her company, Merida Medical Supplies Inc., submitted fraudulent Medicare claims for braces that patients had not requested or received; the claims totalled approximately $6.5 million, of which Medicare paid about $2.8 million.
The DOJ also said Herrera transferred more than $300,000 in proceeds to a cryptocurrency exchange, sent $125,000 through international wires for a property in Mexico and withdrew substantial cash after a payment suspension. She is scheduled for sentencing on 11 May and faces a maximum five-year prison term.
