Lai Kwok-piu was convicted of two counts of bookmaking under section 7(1)(a) of the Gambling Ordinance. The Hong Kong ICAC said he accepted football bets totalling more than HK$3.4 million between November 2016 and March 2020; he was sentenced to 13 months’ imprisonment on 23 January 2026.
The ICAC also said its investigation found that a then Police Sergeant had accepted a HK$500,000 bribe linked to a police investigation, defrauded the Hong Kong Police Credit Union of loans and betted with an illegal bookmaker. The officer was charged in two cases involving bribery, fraud and other offences and received sentences of 18 months’ imprisonment and 240 hours’ community service, respectively.
